In 1996 a significant event took place in the world of alternative rock music. It happened at University College London. On the initiative of two musicians lead vocalist of the rock band Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland the Coldplay was formed. In point of fact, at that time the name of the group was Pectoralz, and after the appearance in the group of the new musicians, that the bassist Guy Berryman and the drummer Will Champion, the name of the band was changed first into Starfish (by 1997), and later, in 1998, into Coldplay.
Coldplay was not a great success from the first days of their appearance on the stage. Before the band became famous worldwide, they managed to record and release their Safety (1998), and their single Brothers&Sisters (1999) and The Blue Room (also 1999) EPs. The band won the worldwide recognition of public just in 2000 together with (and due to) the release of the single "Yellow", from their debut album Parachutes, also released in 2000. Parachutes was followed with A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), successful enough with the public and music critics, and then X&Y (2005), which brought high returns to the band, becoming the best-selling album worldwide in 2005. Then, in 2008, there was the Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, the fourth studio album of Coldplay, which brought them more popularity, and lots of music rewords. At the present time the fans are looking forward to the release of the band’s fifth album Mylo Xyloto.
The list of music awards presented to this band is rather long: NME's Album of the Year for their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), six Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, seven Grammy Awards, and was chosen to be the best artist and the best band of the year 2003 in the opinion of the Rolling Stone readers.
Since June 2000 (the time of their first headlining tour) the band had several successful tours in support of their newly released albums: the U.S. Club Tour in February 2001 after the release of their album Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head Tour (June 2002-September 2003), the Twisted Logic Tour (June 2005 - July 2006), Viva la Vida Tour in 2008. They also had a free concert at Brixton Academy in London and appeared at the Glastonbury Festival, V2003 and Rock Werchter, Coachella, Isle of Wight Festival, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, at Live 8 in Hyde Park in 2005.
The band is also famous for its participation at different charity projects (like the Teenage Cancer Trust, Band Aid 20, Live 8, Hope for Haiti Now, Sound Relief, A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, etc), from the first years of their wide popularity giving 10 percent of the band's profits to charity. They also provide their active support to various social and political causes (like Amnesty International or Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign).
